Prepared Motion
Prepared motion for all divisions:
This house would ban Members of Parliament from floor crossing to a different party.
Students must come prepared to debate both sides of the motion. Students will debate this prepared motion three times.
*Why are we debating the same prepared motion for all three rounds at this tournament?*
Previously, SEDA tournaments with a prepared motion would also include a third-round impromptu motion. As technology has evolved, including the increased availability and integration of generative AI and automated text tools, SEDA has updated its procedures to ensure consistent, transparent, and equitable standards for impromptu preparation, as well as aligning its approach with other debate organizations.
As students are not permitted to use internet enabled devices during impromptu rounds, we will no longer run impromptu rounds at our virtual tournaments.
SEDA’s impromptu debate format is designed to challenge a debater’s ability to independently analyze a motion, organize arguments, and deliver a speech within a limited preparation time. To preserve fairness, competitive integrity, and educational value, preparation for impromptu debates must reflect a debater’s own thinking during designated time. We look forward to seeing you at our impromptu debate tournaments in-person!
Judging
To provide the best experience for students and volunteers, we provide judge training at every event!
- All teams must provide one judge for the event.
- Teams that do not provide a judge may be unable to compete.
- Judges do not need previous experience.
- Judge registration is open here until October 16.
Student Registration
- A registration form must be filled in for each student.
- Space may be limited.
- If you do not have a partner, SEDA will do its best to match you with a partner.
- Debater registration is open here until October 16.
Tournament Fee
- $20 tournament fee per student.
- We offer financial aid when cost is a barrier to participation. Financial aid can be selected on the registration form.
- You will be sent a link to pay by credit card within 48 hours or registering.
- Teams that cancel less than 24 hours before the tournament will still owe tournament fees.
Export event
