Event Details

  • This will be a hybrid event.
    • Friday March 14 rounds will be virtual.
    • Saturday March 15 rounds will be in-person at Luther College High School in Regina. 
  • National Style
    • 2 rounds prepared (Friday)
    • 2 rounds impromptu (Saturday).
    • There will be an open division grand final day 2.
  • A banquet dinner will be provided for all debaters and coaches Saturday. Family members can attend the banquet for an additional fee.  

Qualifying

To be eligible to attend the Provincial Championship, debaters must meet eligibility criteria. You can view the criteria HERE.

Theme & Motions

Theme: Law

Students should come prepared to debate both sides of their prepared motion.

Elementary: This house would replace imprisonment with house arrest for all non-violent offences.

High School: This house supports the land expropriation reform without compensation in South Africa.

Info Slide: The land expropriation without compensation reform in South Africa is a law that allows the government to take land owned by white residents of South Africa without any form of compensation from the state and redistribute it to black South African residents. In South Africa, 72% of private land is owned by the white population, which makes up about 7% of the country's residents.

Judging

  • All teams must provide one judge for each day.  The same judge can do both days, or two different judges can each do one day.
    • Friday Rounds: 5 - 9 PM
    • Saturday Rounds: 12 - 5 PM
  • Teams that do not fulfill the judge requirements will not be able to compete.
  • A judge briefing will be provided each day.

Debater Registration & Fee

  • The debater registration link will be included in the emailed invitations. 
  • Tournament fee: $80 per debater
    • Limited financial aid options available.
    • E-transfer the fee to director@saskdebate.com. Put the students name followed by PRO in the memo line.
    • Teams that cancel less than 48 hours before the tournament will still owe tournament fees.

Observers

  • Each debater is allowed two virtual observers on day one. Virtual observers must be registered on the student’s registration form.
  • In-person observers do not need to be registered.

Meals & Banquet

  • Lunch will be provided for debaters, judges, coaches and moderators on Saturday.
    • Observers can purchase a $15 lunch ticket on the debater registration form.
  • A banquet dinner will be provided for debaters and coaches on Saturday evening.
  • The buffet will be open at 6:30 PM and remain open so those who observe Ramadan can eat after the sun sets.
  • There will be halal and vegetarian options.
  • Awards will be presented at the banquet dinner.
  • One family member per debater can attend the banquet dinner for a fee:
    • Observers can purchase a $40 dinner ticket on the debater registration form.
    • If you are a judge, you can purchase a reduced dinner ticket for $25. Judge dinner tickets are available to purchase through the debater registration form or the judge registration form.

Transportation

  • A coach bus will leave from Saskatoon from the Sobeys in Stonebridge (3100 Preston Avenue South) at 9:15 AM
  • The bus will leave Regina at 8:30 PM to return to the Sobeys in Saskatoon by approximately 11:15 PM.
  • Student bus tickets are $15
  • Observer bus tickets are $15
  • Judges ride the bus for free!

National Championship
